COUTURE GOLF DRESSES? WORK IT, GOLF GIRL!

We found Schriffen while searching for unique, modern golf dresses online - and were so delighted when they sent samples to review.  Interested in having the Gals play in and critique your golf clothing or accessory?  Instructions regarding submitting samples are at the end of this post.

Dawn Says : I love my Anna dress! The clothing design team at Schriffen has created a sporty and sexy golf garment that can be worn either on or off the course. From the fabric to the fit they have captured my attention...

Although I was hesitant about wearing the bow-tie around my next, I barely noticed it was there... 

One of my favorite things about this dress is the playful drape and fullness of the skirt - especially how it flared out when swinging... 

I was particularly impressed with how well the dresses laundered - they were virtually wrinkle free after washing...

My only suggestion for Schriffen is - include matching shorts with a ball pocket to wear underneath!

Shelley Says : I the love insanely soft fabric on my Leah II dress!  Even though it wasn't hot when we played (mid 70's), this garment felt like it would wick away moisture on steamy summer days.  Other favorites?  The extra-full skirt and leather side buckles...   

As the tallest Gal (5'9''), unfortunately all 3 styles were technically too short on me.  Whitney's dress fit like a large shirt - it hit just below my derriere.  Dawn's was a little longer but still too revealing to play in comfortably.  The aqua version seemed to be the longest of the 3, but I still had to kneel instead of lean over when placing my ball on the tee...

In the future, I would order this dress in medium and black - the turquoise color felt like I was wearing a wetsuit on my mid-section.  You could see the divot where my belly button was!  Also, given the short length I'd definitely recommend including matching undershorts. 

Whitney Says : I. Love. Couture. Fashion.  I was very curious to see how my dress and jacket (size sm) would function on the course! The fabric of the Tabitha golf dress was very light and moved with my swing...   

The color and style was very cute, although was not a fan of the ruching - rather than hiding my problem areas, I felt it accentuated them.  The Bow Show jacket's lace peek-a-boo backing looks very sophisticated and offers great coverage while also adding style.  Be sure to order a size up though -  this lightweight coat runs extremely small.  

Pluses of the Tabitha - colors, fabric, zipper and collar.  Minuses?  Length of the skirt, and the lack of shorts and ball pocket.  Overall, I would definitely purchase a Schriffen dress, but would choose a different style for my body type. 

SUMMARY :  

We're going to give our Schriffen Golf Outfits 4 out of 5 balls.  Why not 5?  Here's why:  

1. Include undershorts.  If not, lower the price slightly!  Don't get us wrong - the quality of these dresses is exceptional.  However, the price point ($130 - $180) would be more justified if shorts were included to wear underneath.  And if those shorts included a ball pocket, we'd be happy campers!  Here's the only place we could find to put an extra ball while playing...

 
2. Increase the length slightly.   Even if it's just by 1 inch!  For women that are taller, these dresses are just a tad too short - especially if playing on a private course with strict dress codes.  Again, including attached undershorts would help mitigate this problem! 

3.  A very minor detail, but consider alternatives to the extra large zipper on all 3 styles.  The bow on Dawn's Anna Dress hid this detail, but the industrial zipper on the other 2 styles felt a bit out-of-place given the chic details the rest of the garment exhibits.

BRIGHT COLORS, ODD SIZES AND HIGH PRICES

We were introduced to Golftini's line of  bright geometric print golf clothing at the 2013 PGA Expo in Las Vegas, and were so pleased to receive samples to review for you!  Interested in having the Gals play in and critique your golf clothing or accessory?  Instructions regarding submitting samples are at the end of this post.  

Dawn Says :  I wore Golftini's Blue Lagoon Golf skort, (sz 4) and sleeveless button up polo (sz med) for our recent round of 9 holes... 

According to my measurements, the size chart on Golftini's website indicates I should wear a 6 - however when I tried on the sample size 6 it felt more like a size 2!  Potential size labeling issues during manufacturing?  

During play, the skort felt a little big at the waistband but I thought it had a great length. My size medium top was huge under the arms - I'd definitely choose a smaller size in the future. 

The skirt is 97% cotton and 3% spandex - not alot of stretch but fairly comfortable to play in.  Just as I suspected, the photo above shows how the skort looked after machine washing on gentle and line drying.

Shelley says : Pink and orange is a favorite color combination of mine, that's why I loved the look of my Lucky Charms skort (sz 6) and pink polo (sz med).   

Two thumbs up for this line's subtle attention to detail like the same-pattern attached cotton undershorts, grosgrain ribbon detail on the edges of the 2 side pockets, and Golftini's super cute martini glass logo embroidered on the bottom hem of the surprisingly soft shirt.   

Like Dawn and Whitney, I found that the skirts all suffered from inconsistent sizing.  Here I am trying on Whitney's Jet Setter skort at the end of our round...

Whitney says :  The size discrepancies among these golf skirts highlight why some women have body image problems when shopping for clothing!  Since manufacturers use different models when designing and cutting their clothes - never be discouraged if your usual size doesn't fit!

Positives about these skirts?  I thought the pink and black honeycomb pattern on my Jet Setter skort  (sz 4) was cute and the length was perfect.  The cotton blend fabric wrinkles easily, however, and was kind of scratchy.  After handwashing and drying it flat, here's how mine looked...

The ruching on the front yoke of my white shirt (sz med) was a nice subtle detail, but I did not like the overall boxiness of the shoulders - I prefer a more feminine cut for tops like this pink sleeveless Ping.  The fabric was nice and soft, comfortable while playing during 70-80 degree temperatures.  

SUMMARY :  

We're going to give our Golftini skorts and shirts 2 out of 5 balls.  Why not 5?  Here's why: 

1. Streamline the sizing of the golf skirts!  Based on the inconsistencies we experienced, it would be hard to order the correct size when ordering online.

2. Change the skirt's cotton fabric, but keep the cute patterns!   Polyester blends that wick away moisture and don't wrinkle when wearing or washing are far more preferable.

3.  Lower the price!  This golf outfit's total price is $195 : $75 for the shirt and $120 for the skort.  Given the sizing issues and the amount of maintenance needed to keep the skirt wrinkle free - we think $75 or under for the total set seems more realistic.

WENDY'S 3 TOUR CHALLENGE IS A WIN-WIN!

What an amazing day!  We attended the 2013 3-Tour Challenge sponsored by Wendy's and held at Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, NV.  This charitable tournament raises funds for a great cause - the Dave Thomas Foundation For Adoption.   We arrived early and watched LPGA Tour player Natalie Gulbis warm up on the range with her coach Butch Harmon...

...and the #1 ranked female golfer in the world, Stacy Lewis too! 

See the arrow above?  That's the Las Vegas Strip - Rio Secco has breathtaking views from almost every hole!

Our best dressed winner of the day?  Natalie Gulbis hands down.  We loved her attention to detail and color.  A bright purple Adidas sweater, just the right length orange skirt, and a cute purple polka dot hair bow?  Love.  

Friendly and full of smiles all day, here she is on her way to the 1st tee accepting a gift from a fan...

Gals who goof!  Fooling around with the keep quiet signs - freeze please! 

Overall, attending this tournament was a great experience.  Walking along with the best LPGA golfers, watching and learning from them in real life?  There is no better golf lesson than this! 

A NOT-SO-SPOOKY REVIEW : PING FOR SPRING 2014

We were lucky enough to connect with the good people from PING at the recent PGA Expo in Las Vegas.  We were thrilled when they sent samples our way to review!  Interested in having the Gals play in and critique your golf clothing or accessory?  Instructions regarding submitting samples are at the end of this post. 

 

Dawn Says : I love the black and white dot retro style of this Ping golf skort (sz sm) and the cute pocket detail on the shirt (sz sm).

In my opinion the skort is about 2-3 inches too short and might push the limit of some clubs' dress codes.  I was constantly pulling the built in shorts down - at times they hung past the skirt!  Like Shelley, I found the shirt fabric was not very breathable.  Although this is for a Spring collection, wearing this top on a 90-114 degree day would not pass the performance test.  Whitney's sleeveless shirt with breathable panels would be a much better choice!

Shelley Says : I absolutely loved the bright tangerine and charcoal color combination of my Ping short sleeve shirt (sm sm) and polka dot skort (sz sm).  Both pieces stayed in place when swinging... 

 

...but I would have preferred a bit more length on the skirt.  Loved the attention to detail on the shirt (orange stitching and piping, snap buttons) however I found the fabric to lack breath-ability.  Overall, I absolutely loved the look of this golf outfit - we received several compliments from ladies in the clubhouse and on the course!

Whitney Says :  I felt ready for next Spring in my beautiful light pink shirt and mint green Ping skort!  The shirt's fabric was light and breathable, especially the two breathable panels on the back...

 

I really enjoyed the cut of the sleeveless shirt (sz sm) - a little extra room in front and back.  The skort (sz sm) was very cute, although a little short.  It looked great with my Navika stroke counter! 

SUMMARY :  

We're going to give our PING apparel 4 out of 5 balls.  Why not 5?  Here's why:  

1. Increase the length of the golf skort just a tad!

2. Keep the cute zippered pockets on the front and back of the skort, but create a ball pocket on the attached undershorts.  Nobody likes ball bulge!  

Fill the skort pockets filled with flat objects like ball markers and tees - but keep them zipped!  They're not very flattering when open or with a ball in them.

3.  Consider adding breathable panels to the short sleeve shirts - it was in the upper 80's when we played, and they were not as breathable as Whitney's sleeveless top.

FALL GOLF SHOPPING IN LAS VEGAS!

In search of some new golf apparel for Fall 2013?  Let’s go for a tour around the  Las Vegas valley to find out who has the coolest clothing, shoes and accessories!

Las Vegas Golf and Tennis 

First stop, Las VegasGolf and Tennis located at Boca Park in Summerlin.  This is a new location for this business, previously located at the District in Henderson.  Immediately to the right of the entrance, just past the Hello Kitty section (what?) there were about 6 floor racks and 10 wall racks of golf clothing for women.  This store was predominately stocked with JamieSadock apparel, and had minimal sizes or color choices left from big names Adidas, Nike, and Puma. 

We found it odd that a store located in a city known for it's blazing sun carried such a small and mundane selection of hats and visors...

Las Vegas Golf and Tennis did carry a decent selection of gag gifts if you're on the prowl for golf related holiday gifts and stocking stuffers.  They also have a second location located near the strip on Dean Martin Drive.  Although it seems like a bigger store - again we were disappointed to find only a few racks of women’s golf clothing.

Golf Galaxy

Second stop, GolfGalaxy located in Summerlin.  If you are in need of essentials and building a basic golf wardrobe, this is your place to shop!  Here you will find all the staples in every solid color and no shortage of sizes.  Again, plain and safe styles with limited designer fashion.  A.k.a. boring!

This store has an okay selection of belts and a couple of clearance racks.  The shoe selection was disappointing, and the hats and visors were just plain funny.    

There were no goofy gag gifts at this store, just clothes, accessories and gear.  Golf Galaxy has a new location opening soon in Henderson, we are hopeful the corporate buyer is female?

Dick's Sporting Goods

Third stop, Dick’s Sporting Goods in Henderson.  If you are on a budget, Dick’s has the most clearance racks.  In fact, we've watched the same skirt sit on the clearance rack for the last three years - without the price being lowered at all? 

This store is hit or miss when it comes to ladies golf clothing; sometimes there is an entire wall full of ladies' styles, and sometimes just a table or two.   

We spotted a few somewhat unique pieces like the plaid golf skort with button embellishments on the left.  A typical scenario in each store we visited?  Cool styles only had one piece remaining.  Case in point, the checked Nike shorts above, right.

Dick’s has an assortment of gear and accessories but nothing that really caught our eye.  As for ladies golf shoes, there were only 7 choices... 

Sport Chalet

Final stop, SportsChalet in Henderson.  If you are in search of ladies golf clothing, just keep driving.  Sports Chalet has nothing to choose from.  Tennis skirts are about all you will find here.  A few gag gifts and accessories, maybe some practice balls! 

Summary:

This six hour tour was a disappointing day of golf shopping for us! With over 133 golf courses in Nevada, we're trying hard to understand why there is such a lack of fashionable, unique and functional golf clothing available.  Throughout the day we kept commenting, "If I won a $500 shopping spree at this store I would have a tough time spending it."  Sigh.  We will continue to beg of the golf gods that are responsible for ladies golf clothing, WOMEN LOVE TO SHOP, GIVE US SOMETHING TO BUY!

Tournament Review : Timbers 11th Annual Charity Golf Tournament

Shelley says : First and foremost, what we wore!  That's Whitney on the left in secret agent mode, preparing to decorate a birthday golf cart in her Gals Who Golf sleeveless shirt and Lululemon skirt.  That's me on the right, wearing the same shirt and this Puma skirt.

We arrived super early, yet couldn't have been treated better by the accommodating caddies.  After checking our bags in and finding our cart, we headed to Siena's pro shop.  Their selection wasn't huge, but did have a few cute items.  I really liked this grey plaid nike golf bag, and Whitney was partial to this white ruffle collar shirt by Nivo Golf.

I was surprised not to be more nervous at this point since this was the second tournament for myself and Whitney - plus my first without my spouse.  Would I be able to decide what club to use?  Could I figure out if this sparkly blouse scared me or was awesome?      

Next was a delicious complimentary bbq lunch, then a few practice swings on the range.  I was having a blast!

Whitney says : I was definitely looking forward to playing in this charity event! How can you beat playing a game you love for a great cause?  It was also our friend Travis's birthday - what better way to celebrate than playing 18 holes? 

Golf gifts for the birthday boy...

The atmosphere of the tournament was very festive - definitely set to be a day of fun versus a day of serious play.  There was a beer truck, bbq, giveaways in the swag bag from sponsors Jack Daniels and Southern Comfort, and a raffle with awesome prizes like golf bags, an electric guitar, gift baskets and golf gadgets.   

I took advantage of the option to purchase a "Cheater" button - a great idea to raise more money for the charities while keeping the mood light and not too competitive.  I need all the help I can get!    Donating $10 to the charity came with 5 free mulligans throughout the day.

One thing that struck me most?  There were very few women playing.  Out of about 140 golfers, only 10 players were female. Come on ladies!  Tournaments are great ways to challenge your golf nerves and contribute to a favorite charity.
 
The play was shotgun style , a fun way to golf.  It really takes the pressure off of each stroke and allows you to celebrate your victories (and not sweat your failures).  When you play as a team, you can par almost every hole - it was a fantastic feeling to add up the score card at the end of the game and realize how well we played.  

  

Summary : 

Whitney : One piece of advice?  Make sure you take the full day off of work because tournament play is slow.  There were three ladies who left early and did not finish.  If you sign up to play, honor your commitment and don't leave until the end - even if the play is slow.  Overall, the experience of this tournament was fantastic.  I can't wait to play another!

Shelley : I'm glad we showed up early, this calmed my nerves and gave us time to explore Siena's grounds.  Overall, a beautiful facility - perfect for an outdoor wedding with a view of the Las Vegas strip in the background!  The course was challenging because of overseeding and natural hazards.  The tournament overall?  Impeccably managed.  I had a great experience and can't wait to play in my next one!
